Lots of sheet metal work including rust repair/replacement with new metal, and lots of straightening of damaged panels.

He took the car to Portland Oregon, and had it chemically stripped, after he completely disassembled the car. The process removes all paint and rust.

Getting the body set up level and then establishing datum to duplicate positioning of major replacement structures is a must, in order to end up with the proper fit throughout the process of reconstruction. This is established using a laser from the beginning and continuously throughout the entire build, all the way to, and including the alignment of the bumpers.

Once the main structure assembly is brought back to the proper shape and alignment, it's time to install, reconstruct and patch the outer sheet metal.

Assembling the complete outer body is also very important before the patch panels are done.

Loading the structure with the proper amount of weight and supported at the proper suspension positions is equally important in order to duplicate the exact positioning of the outer panels.

Spot welding structural components together was done by using a Mig welder and doing "plug welds".

All the outer sheet steel and aluminum panels were done with a Tig welder.

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; The main structure will be fitted with all the mechanical, electrical and plumbing and then the pre-fit, pre-surfaced outer panels will be re-installed, final fit and then refinished on the car. This has although not been the conventional way with most cars, it seems to be the best for the Healey. I have split the 216 manifolds and 235/261 manifolds.

I ran 216 manifolds on my 235 in my 1937 Chevrolet pickup. The reason being is that I wanted to use the vintage Edelbrock intake manifold with 216 Stromberg BXOV2 carburetors and the original pancake air cleaners. I actually found a couple original fiber elements to go in the pancake housings too. That will likely not be duplicated as the fiber elements are about as rare as hen's teeth.

This split manifold gives your inline stovebolt six great breathing capacity and incredible sound. With the block that I install between the two halves it has a very crisp cackle.

The distinct advantage in this manifold over the Fenton, besides the look of factory engineering, is the fact that it retains the heat riser capability which prevents carburetor icing.

This split manifold requires two original manifolds to build. The output flange doesn't need to be specific to your manifold as in 216. 235, or 261 as long as the output is matched in angle whether it be straight out or angled back.

With the shrinking dollar, I need $700 to do one like this. It is probably the most labor intensive part of the job when it has been cobbled up like a lot of them with nonfunctional windows, cowl vent, heater/defroster, horn button/wiring, with no horns, no wiper motors, and with the aftermarket replacement odd ball headlight switch, and non matching heater switch.

I was lucky to acquire a pair of original wiper motors, a NOS headlight switch, a NOS ivory colored starter button that I installed in the dash to eliminate the poor design switch that was activated with the clutch pedal arm, and a heater switch that matches the original knobs on the dash. I installed a pair of horns on the existing mounting bracket and of course, rewired the system for those, all the way from the horn button. I also installed a very nice period correct self canceling, 7 wire turn signal switch, that I completely restored back to the hammered finish, reconditioned internal switch, new wire, and NOS TungSol flasher, that is actually the same color as the existing heater/defroster that I restored as well.

I replaced most of the cardboard interior pieces with the exception of the headliner and sun visors that I repainted back to original color.

The door windows are working again with replaced clutch springs in the regulator and new run channels etc. The risers were rusted and in need of replacement as well so I rebuilt them and painted as necessary. I find that those that are available, all need some finish forming to make them work. It's easier for me to just make the panels myself. Then they fit like they should. I've formed the lower parts of the door shells and have one tacked into place. It's very important to keep the door fitting to the opening during the rebuilding process.

Bolting the door on and taking it off again will happen numerous times during the process. If you skip that process, it won't fit in the end. Trying to bend it into shape at that point will result in some ugly distortion and a completely disastrous finish product.

After I am finished welding the shell together, I will check fit again, and then at point I will form the outer skin which I have already made pattern for. The skin will get tacked into place, joining it to the existing skin, and then the whole skin will be removed from the shell at the bottom of the window opening.

I'll be showing the rest of the process in the next posting.
I am more of a Chevrolet fan and I thought I would just display a comparison of the two different versions of the 16" Kelsey Hayes Bent Spoke 40 Spoke accessory wheels.

Seems to me, an argument about which one is the most appealing and proportionate in design would be futile. The center is much more appealing in shape and size on the Chevrolet version.

Actually I have some Mopar wheels and they have the same center as the Chevrolet version. To me, it just doesn't get any better in the early wire spoke wheels. The Mopar wheels are for sale for $400 for the set of 4 with a 36 spoke spare included.

I'm now offering a set of 4 of these Chevy wheels for $800. These are extremely hard to find. I put this set together by advertising up and down the west coast and watching eBay diligently. 5/6/22
General Tire made tires that were named JUMBO, and they were mounted on the aftermarket wheels that are known as the General Jumbo Wheels.

All the other tire manufacturers made similar tires and call them different names like "Air Balloon"and "Air Wheel", etc. but the one that is by far the most well known is the GENERAL JUMBO...

I have owned and seen many different wheels of this sort that were produced for the early 1930 cars, so that they could run "BIG WIDE TIRES" that would go over soft surfaces better than the original "PIE CUTTER" tires.

General offered their JUMBO tires on wheels that were 14",15", and 16". The 16" are by far the most desirable now because there is a fairly wide verity of tires available now in reproduction.

I was very excited to see these wheels that I just purchased on eBay. They are full set of 5 wheels in 16" x 4-1/2" and 6 lug Chevrolet pattern. The wheels are NOS and have never had tires mounted on them. They are wheels that I have never seen before.

Mopar had some wheels that were similar but not the same, if you look closely and count the spokes...

I may use these on a Teardrop trailer that I plan to build. I haven't decided yet as I have a couple of different options of rare accessory wheels that would be great on that application. My other option is the Bent Spoke/40 Spoke/ 16" x 4-1/2" Kelsey Hayes 6 lug wheels.

Update.... I am now offering this set of 5 Clev-weld wheels for $1800. 5/6/22

As you can see by the reflections in the pictures, everything lines up nicely. Some of the details that you will seldom see on a restored Model A, I was able to preserve. It takes a bit of perseverance and attention to retain some of the details that I saved, like the bead roller tracks in the front fender beads, and the patent numbers on the bottom sides of the running boards, and the wrinkles in the original sheet metal stamping that are still visible in the firewall.

To me, these kinds of details really set one car apart from the rest.
restored everything to like new condition, with the exception of the
This particular example has only about 35,000 original miles on it. The previous owner was not good at keeping it on the road, so it was a bit of a challenge getting it looking the way it does now.

I'm pretty confident that it will stand up to in depth critiquing now that we have got a smooth finish of black on the body.

We are waiting for the owner, who is having the chassis finished. Once we get the chassis back, we can set the body back down on it and get all the sheet metal bolted and fit back into place again. Fitting of all the panels has been done numerous times throughout the process of body restoration. (I just wanted to mention that to those who don't understand the proper process.)

I had to make the rear section of the body, up about 12 inches from the back/bottom. Also a large portion of the left front fender, behind the wheel. I think I got about 5 pounds of lead out of that LF fender, around the side vent area.

I have the privilege of doing a full body restoration on one that has only about 32,000 miles on it, and the metal is without any corrosion to speak of.

There is a lot of challenging metal work to do on the car, but this one will be without a doubt, one of the finest examples, when finished.

We acquired a new door from Jaguar By Jorge, for about $2200.00. The first example was made from .040 aluminum and the welding was hideous. The skin also had a big hollow that was sunk in about 1/2 inch in the middle. I didn't even check the door for the fit because it was so ugly that it was not fit to use on a quality restoration.

The second door we got from Jorge was a lot better and didn't have the big glob welds like the first example did, but rather, the skin was dimpled at the edge as it was done originally when these cars were built. It was also made from .020 as was original.

I will have to shrink the skin as it is bulged out quite a bit, and I have had to reshape the ends of the inner shell panels, as well as remove the top inner so that I could trim about 1/4 inch off the wood in order to allow the panel to be riveted to the upper part of the skin as original. They actually installed two channels up against the inner side of the skin, and tried to glue them with epoxy. This kind of thing does not work on a panel like this because if it is actually glued to the outer panel it will cause uneven expansion with temperature change as would be the case with the car in the sunshine. A severe distortion issue would be the result.

Fortunately, they welded very little of the door compared to the original, therefore I was able to completely disassemble the door by just drilling out rivets. I did have to cut the welds loose on the ends of those channels that were installed and cut in two, one that was integrated with the hinge nut panel that they made. This panel did not have the gusset braces like the original.

I am using a lot of the original shell components and discarding a good portion of the $2200.00 door. The parts of that door that I am using are all being reshaped to make them functional.

I purchased a rear body panel from Jorge as well. It was unusable, and I returned it and was charged a large restocking fee for that piece of junk.

He claims that his parts are "fine for most people" and that I am just one in a million. I feel that a car of this caliber especially, should be restored to a level much higher than a typical ammeter would do in his back yard.

I guess I just don't do the type of work that is "fine for most people", as he put it.

You can tell I am very disappointed, to say the least. Enough ranting now...

Let's look at some detail of the project.

Here it is after the clean up and reshaped ends.

The original will be cleaned, painted and installed in the new door.

Now the panel has the proper bracing, bolt spacing etc.

Some of the new and some of the original parts to be used.

The door is now back together and the skin is shrunk down flat enough to surface it properly. It was bulged out about a quarter of an inch. I used four of the original door pieces to make this door usable. Shrinking a .020 aluminum door skin is a two man job. You can't possibly set the torch down and hammer it before the heat dissipates, trying to do it alone. You only have about three seconds to shrink, once you have heated a spot with the torch.
